The essential entertaining tip that I always love to share is the importance of having a few good party dip recipes in your back pocket! They should be easy to make and guaranteed crowd-pleasers. This jalapeno popper dip in the crockpot is just that and more!

Each bite contains a delectable explosion of flavors with a hint of smokiness from the bacon. Its zesty flavor is one that always gets rave reviews when I serve it up. Even better you can serve it right in the slow cooker on warm to keep it heated throughout your event.

This creamy, cheesy, and spicy dip is perfect for holiday events, football watching, family get-togethers, and even a summer cookout! It simply never gets old or goes out of style.

Serve it up with a variety of other easy snack foods and your party is complete. I especially love these grilled chicken wings or BBQ chicken wings and some spicy deviled eggs.

Ingredients

Here's a look at the ingredients you need to make this delicious slow cooker party dip.

Ingredients to make jalapeno popper dip crockpot on the table.
  • Extra virgin olive oil: Used for cooking the jalapenos before adding them to the slow cooker. You can use any neutral-flavored vegetable oil you prefer.
  • Jalapenos: You will be using fresh jalapenos. Be sure to remove the seeds and ribs from the inside as these are where the spice is concentrated.
  • Green onions: For a perfectly balanced mild onion flavor to your dip.
  • Garlic cloves: Fresh garlic is my favorite for adding aromatic flavors to the dip.
  • Cream cheese: It's the creamy base for the dip to give it the consistency you want along with its signature tangy flavor.
  • Cheese: A combination of mild cheddar cheese and Monterey jack cheese is my favorite combination. For the smoothest consistency buy block cheese and grate it yourself.
  • Sour cream: For added creaminess and flavor.
  • Bacon crumbles: Freshly cooked and crumbled bacon adds the best flavor but you can use a store-bought option to save time if needed but avoid imitation bacon.

See the recipe card for the full ingredient list and the quantities of each ingredient.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Use Different Cheeses: Feel free to experiment with your favorite cheese varieties. Using Pepper Jack or Colby Jack cheese makes a unique twist for the dip.
  • Vegetarian: To make this dip vegetarian you can omit the bacon or substitute it with vegetarian bacon bits or finely chopped sautéed mushrooms for a savory touch.
  • Spicy But Without Jalapenos: Use a pinch of cayenne pepper or your favorite hot sauce to achieve the desired level of spiciness.
  • Double or Halve the Recipe: You can easily make a double or triple batch of jalapeno popper dip for parties. Remember that the cooking times may vary when making larger batches and you may need to use a larger slow cooker.
  • Adjust the Spice Level: You can easily change the heat level of the dip by adding or reducing the number of jalapenos. For a milder version, consider removing the seeds and ribs from the jalapenos, or for an extra kick, leave them in.

Storage Tips

Store leftover jalapeno dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. Reheat it in the microwave in short intervals and stir in between. You can also reheat in a slow cooker on low heat but be sure to stir occasionally to maintain the creamy texture. I do not recommend freezing this dip as the texture may become grainy upon thawing.

Can I prepare this Jalapeno Popper Dip in advance?

Yes, you can make it 1-2 days ahead of time! Combine all the ingredients and store them in an airtight container. When ready to serve transfer the mixture to the slow cooker and follow the cooking instructions in the recipe card.

Serving Ideas

  • Serve With Dippers: This dip pairs well with tortilla chips, pretzel crisps, sliced baguette, or fresh vegetable sticks. Choose your favorite dipper or use a variety for parties to give your guests more options.
  • Add Some Toppings: Feel free to get creative with the toppings. Add extra shredded cheese, chopped green onions, or even a drizzle of hot sauce for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Create a Dip Display: Serve up a hot and cold dip with an assortment of dippers when serving a crowd. Everyone will love having some options! You might want to try this Cold Shrimp Dip!

Expert Tips

  • Stirring the Dip. It's important to stir as the dip is heating to avoid it burning on the bottom. Be sure when stirring that you also scrape the bottom of the crockpot.
  • Cooking the Jalapenos. This dip is often made with raw jalapenos but I find giving the jalapenos, onion, and garlic a quick saute gives the dip a more slow-cooked flavor.
  • Adjusting the Flavor. Don't forget you get to control the spice level! For a less spicy dip, you can reduce the number of jalapenos you use.

Recipe FAQs

How can I make jalapeno popper dip without a slow cooker?

Yes, of course. It works great in the oven. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), place the mixture in a baking dish, and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until the mixture is hot and bubbly. Keep an eye on it to avoid overcooking.

Can I use low-fat cheese and sour cream in this recipe?

You can but you will lose a bit of richness and flavor in the dip. Also, some reduced-fat cheeses may not melt as well as their full-fat counterparts.
